Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from natto, a fermented form of soy. Natto has been used as a folk remedy for diseases of the heart and blood vessels for hundreds of years. Nattokinase is promoted for use as a fibrinolytic agent; however, clinical trials are currently lacking to support this use. There is no substantial evidence that nattokinase lowers blood pressure in hypertension. Nattokinase has been used with pycnogenol for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in long airline flights.
